Saint Lucia: Caribbean with a difference

Category: News and Events | 12.3.2018

Unlike many of her sister Caribbean islands, Saint Lucia is mountainous and rugged and the geological footprint offers a different perspective on stereotypical Caribbean landscapes. In early November, 2 members of the HV Team (Dean & Randi) set out to discover this beautiful island. The trip was part of our on-going programme to showcase a selection of our properties with 3D & Virtual Reality Tours. Our ‘shoot’ schedule took us the length and breadth of the island and our sincere thanks go out to Sammy our always happy and very patient driver.

Day One

We arrived on the island on Wednesday afternoon and were met by our airport greeter, Candice. Soon after, our driver and informal tour guide, Sammy arrived to take us from Hewanorra International Airport, located towards the south of the island, to our accommodation in the north of the island about 20 mins from the island’s capital, Castries. The main ‘highway’ infrastructure in Saint Lucia is relatively robust and it took us about 90 minutes to arrive at what would be our home base for the first half of our trip.

Like most of our luxury villa rentals in Saint Lucia, Morne Trulah is perched on a hilltop. However, this villa has the distinction of overlooking Trouya Bay, which is the only thing separating us from Saint Lucia’s famous Pitons and they feel close enough to touch. Our housekeeper, Sharon, had prepared fresh and tasty accoutrements to the steaks which were marinating and all that was left of the evening was to fire up the grill, pour a glass of wine and enjoy a fabulous dinner in the outdoor kitchen / dining area, that is the centre-point of this fabulous property.

Day 2

We woke up with the early sun rise in Saint Lucia to a vast array of fresh and locally grown fruit and again dined outdoors, only this time with blue sky and sunshine forming the backdrop to stunning ocean views. The next few hours were spent shooting the 3D/VR footage of Morne Trulah and its grounds, including the perfectly manicured croquet lawn and the stunning infinity pool.

Our afternoon shoot was at the majestic Villa Hall. This 6 bedroom villa has a large living space with the cathedral ceiling giving the villa a feeling of grandeur. The full height doors to the pool deck are spectacular and once outside you are confronted with amazing ocean views that became the hallmark of our week.

Day 3

Today our featured properties are part of resort complexes. We visited Marigot Bay Resort in the morning where we offer both 2 and 3 bedroom villas. Both are airy and exhibit a subtle blend of modern and traditional features. The resort has 2 communal pools while each villa has its own spa tub. In keeping with St. Lucia’s rich history there is also the fabulous ‘Rum Cave’.

That afternoon we visited a larger resort complex, The Landings, situated approximately 5 minutes from Rodney Bay’s shops, bars and restaurants. Our 3 bedroom villa at The Landings is spacious, close to one of the quiet, relaxing pools and is steps from the beach. The resort includes a number of bars and restaurants and a variety of sports facilities including tennis, a health club and sailing. In addition, the prestigious Saint Lucia Golf Club is only 5 minutes away.

On Friday night, we set off to Gros Ilet, host of the famed street party, where every Friday, roads are closed off and locals and tourists mingle to enjoy the pop-up rum bars, fantastic food and of course dancing to the mega-sound system perched on the curb. A must do Saint Lucian experience!

Day 4

Today we left Morne Trulah and took a short drive down the hill side to the tropical oasis that is C’est La Vie, our home for the remainder of the trip. Set in expansive grounds on the lush greens of Trouya Pointe, C’est La Vie can be enjoyed in 3, 4 or 5 bedroom formats. The oasis like grounds feature a large wading pool with waterfall and a walkway down to a private secluded bay. Oshea & his team provided amazing service and we had the added pleasure of meeting Mike, the property owner, during our shoot.

Our afternoon shoot took us to Saman House, a spectacular villa located at Cap Maison. The property features 2 ‘wings’ either side of the living space and the configuration makes the absolute most of the spectacular views available from each room. The resort features 2 dining facilities including the famed Naked Fisherman, a stunning hilltop gazebo and a fantastic wine cave which housed some stunning wines including the world famous Petrus from Pomerol, France.

Our evening took us to Rodney Bay, a complex of shops, bars and restaurants. We dined at Buzz, a must visit establishment where meat lovers can enjoy a truly absolutely incredible Moroccan spiced lamb shank.

Day 5

Today we visited Cayman Villa a grand and imposing house on the exclusive Cap Estate. It is difficult to do this villa justice with the written word – visit our gallery to get a true feel of what this tremendous house and majestic setting have to offer.

We enjoyed a relatively relaxed late afternoon and evening spent reviewing our week and preparing for our last day on this wonderful island.

Day 6

An early start was in order for the drive to the final house on our whistle stop tour, Villa Susanna. On arriving at the house we were awestruck by the living space and this continued into the expansive kitchen which opens onto a fabulous outdoor dining terrace with a real brick pizza oven. Fortunately for us, it didn’t end there. The property that keeps on giving cemented its place in our favourites list as we moved to the elevated sleeping quarters which are spread over 5 rooms high above the main house. A truly fitting way to end our trip!
