Events & Places

Palais des Papes

The Palace of the Popes sits majestically in Avignon. Tour the world's largest Gothic palace and marvel at the beauty and excess of it all. Afterwards, don't miss the 12th Century Avignon Bridge. You might recall the French song, Sur le Pont d'Avignon! Then relax and enjoy lunch in one of the quintessential squares.

The Camargue

Where the mighty Rhone meets the sea, nature lovers will love the marshes and salt flats of The Camargue. Home to "cowboys" of France on their famous white horses, the area boasts hundreds of bird species including pink flamingos.

Vieux Port of Marseille

Wander the market stalls of the Vieux Port and visit the fish market that has existed here for centuries. Find a cafe in the old winding streets and sample a bowl of the world-famous bouillabaisse followed by a glass of the local Pastis, an anise-flavored liquor popular in the region.

The French "Grand Canyon"

The Gorges du Verdon is Europe's deepest canyon and offers challenging hiking and trekking with rewards of spectacular natural views. Rock climbing and kayaking are also popular in the area.

The Great Antique Festival

Twice a year, in spring and summer, in the gorgeous Isle sur la Sorgue antique hunters from around the globe descend on France's second largest fair. With over 500 vendors, 100,000 visitors hunt for treasures from the past. You never know what you may find!

For Kids

Lavender Everywhere

The Luberon region is awash in purple between June and August. One of the best ways to experience this fragrant flower is at Senanque Abbey near Gordes where monks grow fields of it. You can sample everything from lavender soap to lavender sorbet.

Ochre Cliffs at Roussillon

The red ochre cliffs and quarries in the Luberon are an amazing spectacle. The trails in the area are easily accessible and suitable for all age groups.

Chateau des Baux de Provence

Built in the 10th Century, the remains of this castle are an interactive and imaginative experience that everyone will enjoy. Check the schedule to find out when the largest trebuchet in Europe is launched!

Swim Beneath an Aquaduct

Take a picnic and enjoy a swim below a two thousand year old Roman aquaduct in the Gardon River. Combine with a visit to nearby Pont du Gard, and spend time in the museum and lovely cafe.
