Events & Places

Spinalonga Island

This tiny island is very close to Crete and easily reached by boat. For such a small place, it has had a turbulent past: Arab raids, Venetian conquering, and Ottoman occupation, all before being turned into a Leper colony.

The Village of Loutro

Perched on the south coast, this tiny fishing village is a total throwback to Greece of old. Inaccessible by land (unless you want to hike through the mountains), you arrive by boat and then enjoy all this hidden gem has to offer.

Chania

One of the biggest island cities in the Greek Island, Chania offers lots to see, do and experience. Make sure to visit the Venetian Harbour, the old lighthouse and the Agora Marketplace, among other attractions.

Knossos Palace

The biggest Bronze Age site across all the island, and often referred to as ‘Europe’s oldest city’, for any history buff this is a must-see. Look out for the stunning frescoes and the amazing Throne Room.

Rethymno

This city offers a great mix of modern and ancient. Its historic, old town is great for exploring. Be sure to find the Venetian Harbour. It’s also worth going up Paleokastro hill to Fortetzza, a fort built during the Venetian occupation.

The Cretan Wine Festival

Held every summer, this festival offers visitors the opportunity to try almost all of the flavours and varieties of island wines, while also enjoying a rich program of traditional Cretan and Greek folklore music.

For Kids

Koules Fortress

For any little history buff in your group, this medieval fortress is a must-see. Dominating the entrance to the Venetian harbour of Heraklion, it is one of the city’s most familiar and beloved monuments.

CretAquarium

This huge aquarium is home to some 2,000 creatures. Youngsters will love the shark tank, the jellyfish tank and the hands-on pool where they can up close and personal with critters of the Mediterranean.

Natural History Museum

Located in Heraklion, the Discovery Centre in this museum is crammed with interactive features, including an earthquake simulator and lots of activities designed just for kids.

Eating Out

Family dinners is easy as pie in Crete and Greek tavernas are particularly kid-friendly. Encourage your little ones to sample the regional specialties, including calamari and the cheesy tiropitakia.

Beaches

Crete has plenty to choose from, including a number that are particularly great for kids. Elafonisi offers fun bathing in tiny lagoons, while Kato Gouves has lots of rock pools and clear water for young explorers.
