Events & Places

Kilauea Volcano

Nestled within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. A volcano tour is the best way to see this natural wonder, be it by boat, helicopter or by hiking across the dry lava fields.

Merrie Monarch Festival

This annual festival held is considered “hula’s Olympics” and it turns the town of Hilo into the epicenter of all things hula. Taking place over a week in April, it features a parade, craft fair, live music and dance, and 3 nights of competition.

Mauna Kea

This dormant volcano sits 13,796ft. above sea level and over 33,000ft. from the bottom of the ocean floor, making it the tallest sea mountain in the world. Its summit is also one of the clearest places on the planet for viewing the night sky through the large telescope observatories.

Hot Ponds

There are several hot springs/hot ponds in the Puna district on the island’s eastern coast. Most are publicly accessible and are a great addition to any itinerary – the Ahalanui pond and the Pohoiki warm springs are two of the most popular.

Farmers Markets

One of the Big Island’s little-known gems, there are farmers markets spread out over the entire island – with a little planning you can stop at one for breakfast, another for lunch and another for a little souvenir shopping as you explore.

Golf

The Big Island is known as the golf capital of the state, and Kona is at its centre. Championship courses by some of the biggest names are found here, and all offer spectacular settings. Volcano Golf Course is one of the world’s most unusual courses.

For Kids

Botanical Gardens & Waterfalls

Nani Mau Gardens and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens are great outings for kids who want to explore the island’s unique flora. Feature gentle hiking paths complemented by several beautiful waterfalls that are easily accessible along the way.

Hit the Beach

Hapuna Beach is an expansive white sand beach that is a favourite for families, but if you want something truly unique, visit Punalu‘u black sand beach, a favourite sun bathing spot for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles.

Snorkel with Manta Rays

At night, families can have an amazing snorkeling experience with gentle Manta rays who come out to feed on plankton once the sun goes down.

Ziplining

Lots of options here that will take you and the kids zooming past treetops and waterfalls, including the Umauma Falls & Zipline experience (ages 4+) or the Kohala Zipline (ages 8+).

Traditional Luau

For an authentic dose of culture and lots of fun, a traditional Hawaiian luau wins every time. Sample traditional foods, listen to Hawaiian music and watch as dancers display both traditional and contemporary forms of hula.
