Casa Dell’Ambra

It might be hard to believe that this welcoming country villa began life over 500 hundred years ago as a working farmhouse, complete with livestock on the lower floors and living space upstairs for the family. For all its more recent refinements, Tuscany’s opulent agricultural heritage was created over the centuries in rugged homesteads like this, through the devoted work of many generations. Today a vegetable garden, olive grove and several fruit trees near the house are reminders of its long and fruitful past.

While the atmosphere of an earlier age lives on at Casa dell’ Ambra, the current owners have added all the comforts required for enjoying the updated version of Tuscan country life. Whitewashed walls, beamed ceilings and mellow tiles are complemented by choice antique pieces and sink-into sofas grouped around the imposing fireplace in the sitting room. Meals can be enjoyed in the dining room, in the kitchen or on the shaded terrace outside, while upstairs, comfortable bedrooms and spotless bathrooms await at the end of the day.

Set on an upper terrace behind the house is a lovely heated pool with a stone waterfall and a large pergola. The views from here reach from Lago di Trasimeno in the east across to the lush hillsides to the west. Beyond this the road leads through the woods to the charming town of San Casciano, home to the elegant Fonteverde Spa, great restaurants, weekly market and boutique shopping – all the ingredients you could need for creating a memorable Tuscan vacation!
